We learned how to add forces to MassFX last week. Technically I already knew how cause thats how I did the syrup in the pancakes, but the professor showed us one called Vortex, and I was just like @—-@;;; wooooooow. SO I felt like making this leaf cyclone thing and it was fun. Took a lot of trial and error and tweaking the Vortex a lot but I like how it turned out.

Thats actually kind of a hard question to answer. One main reason is that I’m not sure how much 3DS Max or 3D modeling/animation knowledge you have to begin with, and that would go for anyone asking this question. And secondly, almost everything I’ve learned, aside from my own experimenting and trial-and-error, has been taught by a professor, so I haven’t really needed to look at a lot of tutorials. 

THAT being said, if you’ve never touched anything 3D before, I would start by watching tutorials on how to just work and navigate the program. Theres practically an infinite number of utility in the program so it can be pretty overwhelming if you don’t know how to get around it. And theres a lot of 3D lingo that gets thrown around a lot too like Primitive, Mesh, Material, etc. so learning those will also help understand what tutorials are talking about. 

If you already know how to use the software, then the only thing I could recommend is the Autodesk 3ds Max Learning Channel on Youtube. It has a lot of neat projects. And if you really have some experience, check out 3dsmaxcookie on Youtube as well. But thats about it really. If I ever don’t know how to do something, I just type it into Youtube and theres almost always some kind of tutorial to show how to do it. Theres unfortunately not a really great source of tutorials. Most of them are hard to understand and sometimes people use different versions and it just makes it confusing. 

Anyway, the bottom line is I guess is learn how to navigate the software if you’ve never used it before, and then also practice low-poly modeling or “box” modeling just anything or anything that you like (I guess look up modeling tutorials). If you know the software already, try looking up stuff about something called MassFX, which is the physics simulator that I used to make the pancakes I recently did. That thing is super cool and worth learning. I know I probably didn’t answer the question the way you’d hoped, but I hope this helped at least a bit!

The frog eating the pancakes now. The water is kind of twitchy cause I have a rigid body ontop of an mcloth. And the grass texture is something I found online. Maybe I’ll change it and make the water less twitchy, but probably not. Its for school so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

I decided to try and crank it up a notch and really pixel the textures. Its not that great and I know what I did wrong. Like the arm dithering is larger than the body dithering cause I mapped the arms too small in the UVs. UV unwrapping is haaaaard, like when I wanna do more than just color the polygons. I still like it though. Its one of the tiny imps from Risk of Rain from when you open up the imp jar thing.

OOPS I made this 2 days ago and forgot to put it up here. Energy Cell from Risk of Rain. I figured out that Ink N Paint does not have an opacity setting, BUT after making this gif, I learned that there is like a visibility setting or something for scanline rendering that I can play with. I don’t know yet if its for everything in the scene, but i’ll look into it eventually.

I made a frog. It was supposed to be like a toy or plush doll, but I just kept adding things to a scene and it turned into this! I just went with it. It might be used for my homework (more like i’ll force it into my homework).

Wheeee my first assignment that I finished. We had to take a head given to us by the professor and make facial expressions with it using the Morpher modifier. The head model is my professors (as well as the eyes) but I did the textures and the animating. Obviously the textures are reduced to like 20 colors here to be made into a gif for Tumblr, but the animation is still retained at least.
If youre interested, here is a link to a fully rendered version that doesn’t look like crap. Actually, it just won’t look as crappy. This is the first time I’ve done this so I know it kind of sucks haha.

I’m learning MassFX in my Particle Effects class. And it makes me think of all the time I spent in my animation class last semester making my bouncy balls bounce by hand. Its pretty easy stuff. Heres something I modeled for the first project. My professor is letting me model stuff like this, which is awesome! The woman who is the department head that I have for 3 classes is not, though, which is alright but I LOVE DOING THIIIIS!
